NO SURPRISE AS PARAMOUNT'S "IRON MAN" LEADS WEEKEND

With a family friendly PG rating and built-in fan base of the creators of "The Matrix" franchise, "Speed" should enjoy a strong debut this weekend. Of course Paramount's "Iron Man" which opened with close to $100 million, should realize a fairly small second weekend drop and is the odds on favorite to lead the weekend. With terrific word-of-mouth, great reviews and a special surprise after the end credits, fans may be lining up for repeated viewings. Mid-week grosses also indicate the potential for a solid sophomore session that will fuel strong box-office momentum as the kick off month of the summer continues.

Each week seems to have a element of counter-programming in the weekend mix as Fox introduces the romantic comedy "What Happens in Vegas" with Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz as two people who discover they've gotten married following a night of debauchery, with one of them winning a huge jackpot after playing the other's quarter. Of course, love ensues and complicates matter further. This PG-13 comedy will offer an adult comedy alternative to "Speed Racer" and "Iron Man" and with comedies dominating the top 5 box-office in recent weeks, it seems that audiences are in the mood to laugh. Beyond the two wide release openers, the marketplace gets crowded with eleven additional film set for limited release. Last year at this time saw "Spider-Man 3" earning a whopping $58 million in its second weekend and totally dominating the marketplace. Still, this looks to be a strong second weekend of the summer movie season at the nation's theatres.

LAST WEEKEND RE-CAP
Paramount's "Iron Man" exceeds expectations and posts the second biggest non-sequel opening of all-time!

With the opening of Paramount's "Iron Man" and Sony's "Made of Honor," the Summer of 2008 officially kicks off this weekend...
As expected Paramount's "Iron Man" tops the weekend while exceeding most box-office predictions. With nearly $200 million in global weekend box-office and $102.1 million domestically (including $3.5 million in Thursday previews), the film posted the second highest non-sequel opening ever (behind the original "Spider-Man's" $114.8 million) and the tenth biggest opening weekend of all-time. With great reviews, strong word-of-mouth and a terrific marketing campaign with excellent trailers and TV spots, the film was destined to be a big winner. A stellar cast of Academy award nominees coupled with the cinematic sensibility of director Jon Favreau created an irresistable combination that brought the whole enterprise above that which is typically expected from this genre. No surprise that two sequels have already been annonced for this new Marvel Comic franchise. "Iron Man" was simply a great way to start the Summer of 2008.
